Diesel Flywheel

I have a 58 851 Diesel and recently I bought a 5 speed transmission, double clutch and flywheel out of a 57 800 gas. I've been told the flywheel out of a gas is not the right one for a diesel. What is the difference and how can I tell the difference? I'm in no hurry to do the swap, but want to have the right parts before I start the transplant.

Probably the balance on the flywheel. Diesel motor might be of a different bore or stroke, changes the weight of the pistons, crank balance, etc.

I just went to the CNH site and looked them up. Gas and diesel for the XX1 are the same, given same type of clutch, but XX0 is different from XX1.with some study of the parts pages you may be able to narrow it down some but I expect you will have to get them side by side to see. I doubt that there is a significant difference. I recently transplanted a fly wheel from a 4600 into a 9000 with a little machining, so they most likely will bolt up the same, but the difference may be in the clutch mounting holes which of course a machine shop could take care of for you.

I've been to the CNH website several times and found the flywheels on the XX1 gas and diesel are the same but different from the the XX0, however the diesel was not available in the XXO. I'm wandering if Ford changed the flywheel on both gas and diesel for the XX1 to the diesel one. Also, in the Ford Tractor Shop Manual there is a photo of the double clutch with the flywheel and and the flywheel has raised pads where the clutch assembly mounts. My XXO flywheel doesn't have those pads. It appears the one in the photo is thicker than my gas one, thus heavier.
Does anyone know what the actual difference is between the XXO and the XX1 and which one goes with the diesel engines? I suspect the thicker one is heavier for the diesel engine and on the XX1 gas it doesn't matter all that much which one is used on the XX1 gas. Also if the thicker one is used wouldn't that put the clutch assembly closer to the transmission requiring some allowance to the throw-out bearing or it's adjustment?

Overall thickness is 2 and 27/32. This is to the surface that the clutch bolts to. There is a recess on the clutch side 1 and 5/32 deep near center down to 1 and 7/32 towards about two inches from the outer edge. The other side has a recess approx. 7/32 for the end of the crank. This is of course for the two stage LPTO clutch. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the measurements. I measured the one I have and it measures 1 and 23/32 thick while the recessed area has about the same dimensions as yours. I guess the X00 flywheel is for gas only. I was wandering if I could take a 4 speed flywheel from a 641 and re-machine it to the diesel dimensions you supplied. It is about four inches thick on my 641 as I recall. I'm not sure what the O.D. is but I think it is close to the diesel. I have a tool shop of my own with a 15" LeBlond lathe to do the machining. Or do you know of someone who has a flywheel for sale?
