Here is my problem. use my JD 401 for flail mowing. The mower is a 8 ft, and the JD pulls it real good. I am mowing today, and the tractor just runs out of power. Re start it after sitting, and it runs full power for about 10 min, and it runs out of power again. Brought it home Now what? The filter is new last year, with few hrs.Stan

Is the gas cap fully vented (no pressure/no vacuum)? Is the valve at the bottom of the tank fully open? Is the screen in the bottom of the tank partially clogged? If algae is growing in the tank, it will have to be cleaned out, the clogged filter replaced, and biocide should be added to the fuel. Hopefully, it"s something simple and not the injector pump. Good luck! Keep us posted.

Diesel engine? Check out fuel supply system. If that's OK, A diesel engine will act like that if the fuel RETURN system gets blocked.
Put a catch pan under the engine, disconnect the fuel return line to the tank, at the front injector, and the fuel return line at the injector pump. (If the injector pump has the rectangular top, with 3 holddown screws, also remove the fitting from the top.) Any debris in the fitting? (it's a one-way check valve, there is a glass ball in there.) Remove the rectangular timing cover plate (2 screws) from the side of the pump. Any debris in there? Debris usually indicates pump parts are failing. Put the side cover plate back on.
Then you could try and start the engine to see if the problem is still there. With the lines disconnected, fuel will dribble out. Be Careful.
Blow air thru tubing to be sure they are clear before you reconnect them.

Thanks for theinfo. It is a diesel with a roosa master pump.I checked the glass check valve it was plugged with plastic looking fine coffee ground size pieces. I cleaned the check valve, and it seams to operate ok. From what you said this means the pump is failing, and it will probably plug again. In this condition can it be operated very long? Or should I just have it rebuilt? Stan

Ask a pump guy on that one. Try using it and see how often it plays out and annoying it is for you, may answer your question.

How long it will run after cleaning out the debris from check valve depends on how deteriorated the governor ring is. I witnessed a 4020 yrs ago that was run for several 100 hrs.

Downside is one day the engine may speed to uncontrollable RPM's then go boom.
