Floods Central NY

Had a lot of rain with flooding a couple of days ago. Looked out the window at 5 AM and 7 Am everything looked normal Noticed the water rising at 10 am. by noon it was at the doorstep. 3 sump pumps running in the cellar kept up pretty good, about 1 ft. max. by 5pm the water had gone down a lot. By 5 am the next day, it was almost back to normal. Today, saturday, sunny things are back to normal except for real soggy ground. It's gonna be awhile before the farmers get back in the field. Last 2 photos are corn fields over by the river that won't be planted for a while. It was amazing how fast the water came up and equally amazing how fast it dropped. The last picture is the fast moving stream between the house and garage that used to be a driveway. The only damage repair will be another load of gravel in the driveway unless I can get it back off the lawn. The floor of the hen house stayed about 4 inches above the water.

Dave, Was wondering about septic systems being flooded and non working. Pictures look like that would be the case. How high is the water table where your at??.Does the flooded area become known to the insurance company's as a flood plane?Sure would be a mess around here with that much water. Had a slight flood once where the caskets from the cemetery floated across the road. Not known who is buried where. Were way up on the high side of the lake aprox 30 feet above the road. all Sand and gravel. Only saving grace of it all. That much water is a bad scene . Glad no one is called from this earth because of it. Regards LOU.

Hay Lou my friend, It looks like the water table is about Knee high to a 10' indian in a lot of places. LOL
Dave, similar here. A lot of localized flooding on the West Canada Creek, and the Mohawk Valley. Up north, Hamilton, Washington, and Essex Counties on the upper end of the Hudson River got it bad. The Great Sacandaga is at all time highs, to prevent down stream flooding of the Hudson River

As for the non working septic, it lasted about 8 hrs. By nighttime it was working again. Up until this year, the flood plain was only back by the apple tree to the left of the small hen house. But this year the experts extended it up the hill about a 1/4 mile. If it gets that high my house will be underwater or on its way to Binghamton. Neighbor tells me his bank requires flood insurance until the loan is paid off. Normally the water table is about 5 to 6 ft. down. The Chevy dealer next door moved all his cars up to the cemetery. This happened in 2006 and the water was up to the rocker panels on his cars before he got them out of his lot. Before that it was 1935. These 100 year floods are coming around more often these days.

Dave. Thanks for the reply. I didn't mean to stir up a hornets nest with my questions. Why I was so inquisitive was the low lands around here, the river and creeks gets exceptionally high after extended rain fall. They(property owners) to also require flood insurance. Most around here are in hard pan, and require a mounded system to get evaporation but quite expensive.Soil perks at different rates just feet apart when perk is done on a site. Where we live is a extreemly different set up by mother nature.Just crossing the bridge at the creek becomes all SAND( as you can see by our pictures. The other side of the creek is the opposite. HARD PAN !!!. All the property owners are required to have a mounded system at $15,000 a clip. Some are on the lake shore and the tank has pumps to lift the water in the tank up to the field. They had several problems with the mounded system BLOWING OUT THE SIDES and contaminating the surrounding ground and leaking to the lake.Lots of rules apply. Some are only running a HOLDING TANK that requires a constant monitoring. Gets expensive too. That was the reason I asked the questions I did. Thank again REGARDS, LOU.
