Bill, The 400 would have a positive ground as it came from the factory. Many were converted to negitive ground when being converted to 12 volt and an alternator. Most alternators require a negitive ground. To convert to negitive ground requires the rewiring of the amp gauge and probably some wiring changes on the regulator & generator if that is still on your tractor. The starter will work either way.
