Yes, you can do it through the bottom. It's a puzzle getting it out and back in, but possible. When I did it, I had to take out the cross shaft that works the clutch fork. The main drive coupling in front of the transmission has to be taken loose. You can't get the main drive shaft out of the clutch until you take pressure plate loose from the flywheel (at least I could not). You can compress the pressure plate by taking out three of the 6 bolts that hold the plate to the flywheel and then reinstalling the bolts in three empty holes which will compress the springs and release the clutch plate. Still not enough to get the shaft out without taking the other three bolts loose. The clutch has to be compressed with those three bolts when you put it back in otherwise you can't get the main shaft in and lined back up.
