I finally found the source of my rattle. After putting the block on my engine stand to spin it over quickly, I identified the noise to be coming from the top of the block. I popped out the expansion plug and found a broken piece of cast trapped between the cylinders. I now have a souvenir from the factory!
I pulled all the passageway plugs yesterday and cleaned everything out. I only found a few of the plugs to be hiding dirt and old fluid, it was worth while. I was able to remove the safety valve piston with a pair of jeweler’s needle nose pliers, but I still cannot get the pressure regulator valve seat out.
Pete, you were right, the front of your control block was a "cruddy mess." Glad you got it apart; I hope Sam is making progress too. The YT forum is a GREAT venue, how else would those of us doing the same project across the States be able to share like this? Awesome, thanks!
