One wire from the genny's ARM post should wire to ARM/GEN on a Voltage regulator (or Cutout Relay) and the other wire from FLD post on the genny wires to FLD terminal on a Voltage Regulator. Then the BAT terminal on a Voltage Regulator (or Cutout Relay) wires to an ammeter if it has one, otherwise it would wire eventually to the hot ungrounded battery post often to where the big battery cable attaches to a starter solenoid or switches input.
If the Gennys ARM post is connected to a battery post or battery cable etc THAT WILL DISCHARGE THE BATTERY VERY FAST when shes shut down and the genny get hot THATS VERY VERY WICKED. Theres supposed to be a cutout relay in between ARM on Genny and the battery or ammeter or big cable etc which opens upon shut down.
Get it wired correct and then run my Troubleshooting Orocedure is best I can say for now not knowing what you have there
