There's a gear on the front of the engine that drives off the timing gear of the camshaft that drives the distributor. Perhaps you're thinking of a D-19 that's driven from the middle of the camshaft. Dan, Sorry about mis-information, You are absolutely correct. It was the oil pump that had a bad gear and it drives off the camshaft. (Gas D17, prior to series IV.)
