Its well studied. It is absolutely a problem. Any plant material burned gives of tons of cancer causing compounds especially when its smouldering combustion. Nothing special about tobacco in this aspect, you dry broccoli and smoke it, same issues.
Cancer is a statistical risk that your cells don't fix something right, some people will luck out. More people won't.
