I have a 1991 E 150 and at least 6 years ago the muffler went bad. I cut the old muffler out and installed a piece of straight pipe in place of the muffler. It works great and I like the sound. The catalytic converter quiets it down enough so that it is not excessively noisy. After doing this I actually could hear the different exhaust sounds when the torque converter locks and unlocks. Before this I didn't know that the torque converter would stay locked up until it reached a certain speed on deceleration. If you try this you may have to put an offset in the new pipe if the muffler has the inlet and outlet at different positions.
