Belt dressing.

I run several pieces of old machinery with
flat belts, everything from a threshing machine
to a two-hole cornsheller. I was wondering if
anybody had a recipe for old-fashioned belt
dressing. The new spray on stuff works ok for
V-belts but doesn't do much for the old flat
belts. I know of a local agri-supply store that
carries pine tar and I was wondering if that
would serve as a good base. I've looked on the
internet and found out that sailors use it for
waterproofing. (I also found out people mix it
with honey to make cough syrup- I stick with the
belt dressing idea.) Does anyone have any other
ideas on belt dressing?
