I have an 8n ford converted to negative ground and a twelve volt system. I used a gm alternator and changed the ignition coil also adding a ballast resistor. I used a ford starting solonoid and changed the lighting. The starter is the factory 6 volt and has been in use for 10 years or more the only problem i have had is if the points are closed when the tractor is shut off the battery will drain through the points.
This can be corrected by installing a diode in the lead that goes to the ingnition switch preventing a backfeed through the points. There has been no damage to the starter and in fact it starts much easier. Bye the way my ford has a funk-aircraft 6cyl conversion. Hope this will help.
