Many thanks to BushogPapa, olddog, and DiyDave. Your advice was appreciated and followed. I tried to avoid the labor and time intensive next-to-last resort of filing down the 162 teeth on the flywheel ring gear. I finally caved in and bit the bullet and spent a few hours filing off the burrs through that small access where the starter usually goes... but not until trying some easier fixes: 1. Cleaning the battery connectors and cables, resoldering where they appeared weak. 2. Sending the starter to General Armature for a check and rebuild, where the front bearing and gear were replaced. 3. Installing new Solenoid, None of the above worked so I finally faced the music and did my best to reface and deburr the teeth... I've since decided that I am not destined to be a dentist! but may have a future as a contortionist! Anyway, the screechy-grindy noise may have improved a little bit, lasting only about 1-2 seconds rather than 2-3 seconds before the starter finally engages to start the motor. I am now ready to do a more thorough check of all cables as well as trying a whole different battery. Any other suggestions?
