I have a 1943 H (FBH 141850) which has its distributor in a vertical (90 degree angle) position. All the pictures I've seen show the distributor in a horizontal position coming out of the governor.
Anyone else seen this, know where it comes from? Thanks

My 46 M has an upright Delco distributor on it.A friend of mine has a Delco parts manual for industrial and ag applications and it shows these distributors offered for all makes,2 cyl John Deeres included,as a cheaper replacement fora mag.It doesn't call out these in any IH parts books, but thats not to say that the dealers didn't sell them in the day.

My 41 H has an aftermarket live hydraulic pump, driven after an upright IH distributor.

Lots of upright Delco's out there - they were sold in the '50's along with IH flats, also made by Delco by IH dealers. When I was a kid, you could buy either one at less cost than fixing a mag. We replaced two mags on H's, one with an upright, one with a flat when the mags went bad. Points & rotors were easy to find, they were the same as those used in Chevy's of the era. Wish I'd picked the mags from junk pile when Dad sold out in '85. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

According to an old timer at the dealership I work for they were available from IH as a replacement unit for a magneto.
There is no info in the parts books on them except an added note that they were a Delco.
In our old "M" parts book someone wrote in to use the numbers for a Case 300B or 400B.
If that is correct the CNH part number for the points is F10714 and the condenser is 496731C1.
The cap is G44038 and the rotor is G44040.

one of the main reason for the verticle type is when as when you have a mounted cornpicker on the tractor it is much easier to access the distributer ie; points,wires.timing,ect.

Don't know if you can see it in this photo but my old H has the same thing. Seems to work well enough. The hood fits a little close to the plug wires on the dist end.

Yep
I have a 1948 Super AV with a vertical distributor, I think it is a Delco.
I posted the question about it on here some time ago and got some some good answers.
Try a search in the archives to find the answers!

Take a close look, probably a Delco-Remy someone put on to replace the magneto. Pretty common replacement.

I have a c farmall with the vertical distributor and it has the delco remy plate on the side of it and I have had guys argue with me that only IH made the distributors that went on its tractors.

What they told you was correct. The factory only offered letter series tractors with an IH battery ignition unit or an IH magneto. The Delco unit was sold by IH dealers, who were allowed to sell the customer any accessory they pleased regardless of who made it. No letter series tractor left the factory with a delco distributor. Typically, the Delco kit was cheaper because Delco made hundreds of thousands of the things a year. We have an M with the Delco and a W6 with the IH and don't notice any difference between them that I would attribute to the distributor.
