Super C generator circuit

I have wired my Super C the same as Bob Melville’s wiring diagram for a Super H. The Super C manual shows the drawing to be correct for either C or H with the exception of the Magneto which doesn’t matter in this case. I haven’t started the tractor yet, but how does this work? It would seem to me that the field of the generator needs exciting for it to produce current out the armature. With no switch to excite the field, is the regulator smart enough to do this automatically (I don’t think so)? If there was voltage applied to the field and the tractor was not running, then it would drain the battery. What up?
Thanks,
Joe

The field is grounded in the reg. and supplied with voltage from the armature. When turning, the residual magnetism in the gen field poles create enough output to close the cutout relay in the VR allowing full volts to be applied to the armature, and thus the field is excited by the output in the gen, and grounded in the regulator. Make sure the reg is grounded to the tractor on clean metal. Polarize the gen before starting. JimN

How do I polarize the generator? I know I've seen the proceedure somewhere, but where i'm not sure. So in a nutshell it is automatic.

Thanks for the info,

Joe

Joe - With the battery connected and the engine shut down, momentarily jumper the BAT and GEN terminals at the regulator. The instant the jumper connection is made (you may see a small spark when it connects...) the generator is polarized!
