This is a follow up from a posted message yesterday.

On Wednesday I was pushing a load of snow with my tractor when it developed a cluninking in the transmission. I was able to drive the tractor far enough to get it put away, and I haven't moved it since.

As long as the clutch is depressed the clunking noise goes away but if you are in 1st gear, reverse, or neutral the noise is present. I haven't tried the other gears.

Any ideas?

Andy

My old H does this. I have not fixed it yet but it has a bad bearing on the Main shaft and it clunks any time the clutch is out. That is why I ask yesterday about checking it running in neutral. It could be caused by various things you will have to investegate to find out what the problem is.

georgeky,

Thanks for the help. I'll look into sometime... just need to see if the wife will let me do it before I have completed her room in the basement.

Of course I will still need to get it fixed in time to reseed her horse pasture this spring. Any ideas on how to squeeze 28 hours out of a day?

Thanks again to everyone,

Andy

yes andy, here is how u can get 28 hours out of a day. First you need to leave the home, and find or develop a very efficient powerful motor to power a spaceship. Now, u have someone at home doing your work. You go on an adventure at near the speed of light. After 24 hours have past, you arrive home to find out 28 if not more hours have past to the people at home. Time is relative, the faster to the speed of light you go, the more time slows down relative to the people on earth or relatively stationary. I'm sure some will say "the earth is moving too you idiot" Here is were relativeity comes into play. EVERYTHING is relative and nothing is definite. With the uncertainty principle it is possible to do remarkable things, like walk through a wall. Calculations have determined that it would take someone walking into a wall for nearly an eternity to have the infinitely miniscule chance of it happening, but it is possible. Not being able to know an electrons speed and position at the same time makes lots of wonderful things possible. Now here is were statiscs come into play in determining what is likley to happen from previous observations.

Ok, Have I confused you yet? Just a few ideas like you asked...

Good idea Jay!

Although, I'm a little scared of the time it would take to approach 2.998 X10^23 m/s (from memeory now, correct me if I'm wrong) at an acceleration that wouldn't rip me appart.

But I do like your idea of finding someone else to do my work for me. I keep calling around in the paper, but they just laugh at me when I tell them the warm feeling they get is reward enough for their kindness.

Thanks for the idea's... Keep them coming.

If I understood correct you were in reverse when noise started and the noise is present with engine running in neutral foot off clutch. My guess is that problem is on reverse idler gear or second speed gear on counter shaft that drives reverse idler.

So you are saying that the noise is present with the clutch pedal up, the transmission in neutral, and the tractor is not moving?

RustyFarmall,

You are correct. Pedal up, transmission in neutral and not moving. Clunking noise.

Thanks for any idea's.

Pull the belt pulley, or cover where it bolts down, and look at the condition of the constant mesh gear. Examine each tooth to see if there is damage. other gears can be seen from there as well, so it is the least difficult observation port. JimN
