I'm pulling the engine on a I-4 and not being as much of an IH man I keep getting stumped.

My current question involves the rear mounting bolts. Just aft of the large bolt on each side is a short bolt end or stud sticking up that I cannot tell where it comes from. Anyone know what this is?

Also I am having no luck breaking the joint apart on the shaft between the clutch and the transmission input shaft. I have the nuts removed on all 4 bolts of the flex joint, but have been unable to budge them. Are the bolts tapered? I'm hesitant to get rough with them not knowing just whats what.

Thanks for the info. My best guess was that the studs were some sort of dowel pin threaded in from the bottom or maybe a jackscrew to set a more precise alignment than the regular bolts would. I never would have thought of pulling them out with a nut... Had thought of trying to back them out with vise-grips maybe, but was askeered to till I knew what I was getting into.

I'll monkey with the coupler bolts some more. I'm assuming that once I have the coupler free and lift the engine the entire shaft/yolk/throwout bearing assembly with come on out with the engine.

The 4 joint bolt could also have some wear on them making them hard to get out. I just used a wrench and some WD40 to work them out. WhenI pulled my engine,I got it just high enough to slide the shaft out.

Those threaded studs will pull out by putting a nut on and tightening. This will pull the pins from the other casting making removal alot easier. Just tap them back in when you go to reassemble to use them to line things up again. If you put a washer under the nut you shouldn't even scratch the paint. Mike

Yes, the treaded ends you see are lineup pins. they should lift right out with the casting. Yes, the bolts in the coupler joint are tapered. Whack the yoke where the bolt goes through and they will pop right out.

Secure the shaft/yoke so it won"t turn; put a 6-point socket on a breaker bar and you can turn the tapered bolt. The bolt will almost fall out once you can rotate it.
