Put a load test on each battery. I think one may be bad. If it started once, the cables should be ok.

teddy: Using your criteria, one would have to expect if tractor started when new, it would start forever. Very good thinking.

My experience tells me cables can quit anytime, yes even a hour after the tractor started cold at -30F. Probably 80% of the starting problems we see on here a cable related. Roughly 70% of all discarded batteries are discarded because of poor cables and connections.

You need to check the battery electrolyte in each battery cell. Your batteries should have specific gravity reading around 1.250 and each cell should be close to one another. Buy or make new 00 battery cables. Make sure all spades are soldered as stated earlier and buff
the spades with a wire buffing wheel until shiny. Clean the battery terminals and the ends of your battery cables that are attached to the batteries. Do the same where the batteries are grounded and at the starter solenoid. Rust and paint are good insulators. Hal

To add to what is wisely stated below, I would make sure the batteries are charged. There may be a draw that has run them down to the point they will work the fuel gauge, but little else. Put a volt meter across the battery while someone is trying to start it, (no more than 3-4 seconds) if the volts are less than 10.5, the battery needs to be charged. Checking each connection, and buffing them up with a dremel to bare metal is good insurance. JimN

tise: Sounds to me as though you have poor connections on battery cables or cables just not large enough. Those glow plugs draw a lot of amps. Close to same amount as starter.

Those cables have to be 00 guage with soldered on ends, and they have to be in top condition. That my friend is must with diesel, especially one with glow plugs.

First place I would look is the solenoid and bendix on the starter. If the bendix is bad it won't kick the small gear into the flywheel and it will just whine. The solenoid could be shorted also
