Got a new ring gear and it is not bevelled like the old one. Machine shop man said as long as the starter is that it will be ok. Should I expect any difficulties with this?

Thanks,

Bri

I went through that with a MM Z. The new ring gear did not have one side beveled. The starter would sometimes hit the end of the tooth and just clank. Local mechanic changed to a clutch drive on starter and no problems. He said that old style bendix SHOULD have beveled teeth on ring gear and then they only act up when worn badly. Makes some sense but his opinion.

I have replaced several and they work just fine. If some teeth are missing you can just take off the ring gear and reverse it that works also. Just use heat to expand the ring gear and it goes on easy.

If it were mine, I would look at the drive pinion gear teeth and then bevel the opposite (non-drive) side of the teeth on the ring gear. A dremel and 20 minutes to knock off the edge would just make it less tough on the pinion as it entered. JimN

Thanks J, I think I'll do that. Have you heard of this before? Is it common that the replacement gear isn't bevelled?

I replaced the ring gear on my Super H a couple years ago. The new gear did not have beveled teeth. But it works just fine - it completely eliminated a chronic starter jamming problem.

Many are not, it is not a terrible wrong, I just like to give them an advantage, They hang up enough as it is. The new drive from IH with a clutch instead of a spring system seems (from accounts here) to be solving some issues with the jambing. JimN
