Mag problem

Had trouble starting my A with an IH mag. It usually starts with about 1 rpm! Last few times, hard starting. Thought the toggle switch for the shut off (grounding) was bad, so I disconnected it and the Farmall started. Great. but hooked the wire up and no spark, took it off, no spark, revoved cap and rotor and cleaned points, etc and still no spark. So what is my next move?? Remove mag and take it to a repair shop, or? (Had 15 or so tractors in the past 20 years and this is the first one with a mag.) Apreciate any suggestions. Thanks

first thing I would check would be the bakelite insulator between the condensor and the housing (where the coil wire, points wire, and kill wire meet on the condensor) That piece will crumble and short your sparkies. I agree with Bob, no reason to send it anywhere. They are simple devices, and you can fix it yourself.

Could the "kill" wire have contacted battery voltage while disconnected?

Otherwise it sounds like dirty points a bad condensor or a failed coil.

Also check for loose/broken/dirty connections in the coil/condensor/point area.

You might try cleaning the points again, if that doesn't work, here's a link to the guy that can fix it for you.

Or a how about a link to the manual showing him how to fix it himself.... (Saves A LOT on shipping both ways!)
