There was an old farmer in our community who had a "C", one of the first to be sold. If my memory serves me well it was a flat head with the plugs out the top. Is my memory ok or were there no flat heads sold?

I guess it would be best if I could find the old tractor and verify. I haven't seen it in since the early 70's about the time Mr. O'neal died. There was no question about it being a "C". The only question concerns the engin being a flat head. Thanks for all the input guys.

Maybe it wasn't a IHC C? Massey-Harris was also reddish color, old paint and fading memories could get them mixed up. Massy had some models with flathead continental engines. RN

Here's an early Farmall F12 with the Waukasha flathead engine on Ebay.

If it has a flathead engine someone must have changed the engine. We had a C and it had overhead valves. Even the Fairway 12 that came out way before the C had the C-113 cid engine with
overhead valves. Here's one made in 1938. Hal

I know all the F 14's had an over head valve engine made by IH. I also belive the F12's had all over heads to I know that the majority by far if not all had an IH engine. Im not sure if some of the very first ones had Wakashaw engings in them but I bellvie that too were over head designs. Cant think of any flat head engines that IH ever used besides that Cub.

The Green Diamond engine was a flathead. It was used in D, K, and KB trucks thru the class five size. I think it had two displacements: 213 and 233 cubic inch. It was also used in some industrial tractors like airplane movers and factory yard tractors. Not sure if IH built the whole tractor.

Andrew - You're right about the F-12 Waukesha engine. But it was a flathead, not an OHV.

Something like the first 2,500 or so F-12's were assembled with the Waukesha flat head. Subsequent F-12 production used the IHC-built OHV engine.

FWIW I believe both engines displaced 113 cubic inches.

They all had the 113CI. over head vlave engine. Made by IH. I belive the only flat head that IH built was the 60CI for the Cub.

Thanks Andrew,
The old guy passed away back in the 1960's. I know that he had very well worn out the old tractor (and al lot of mules before that). I still have the image of a flat head with spark plugs in the top of the head. It did not strike me as strange since we had Ford trucks with flat heads which we used up into the 1970's. Larry
