Well, we had done the test on the generator where you ground the field terminal again and it began charging when the generator was hooked up with a negative ground. Well I just put another regulator on it, and reversed the terminals back to positive ground and this time I grounded the field terminal and then jumped the batt and arm terminals. I reconnected the field terminal and then when I started the tractor, the ammeter went back and pegged at full drain again. I think I am just going to get a different rebuilt generator. There almost must be something wrong with it if it does this all the time!!!

If the ammeter also shows discharge when you turn on the lights without the engine running then that part is wired right. The wire from the BATT term on the cutout (the one by itself) should hook to the ammeter on the same post as the wire to the light switch. Take the cover off the brush end of the generator and make sure that the wires to the brushes are not touching the case or the cover strap. Verify that and if OK either take the generator in and have it rebuilt locally or get a replacement. Last point-if the generator has three brushes it should use a cutout not a full regulator. The cutout has only one relay in it and three posts, GEN, BATT, FIELD, take the cover off and check. MAX output of the gen is only about 20 amps with the field grounded.

The ammeter polarity matters as to whether or not is shows charge or discharge, but I just read your old post from January and it seems like you can recognize what it's supposed to be doing.

I agree that if the ammeter is pegging out there is a problem. Even with the leads reversed you should only show 2-3 amps (dis)charge.

I will defer to Bob M. He is the expert on these things. He walked me through how to do this on my 'A' about five yeas ago and he really knows his stuff. I have a feeling that the rebuild shop's negative ground is polarizing ("training") the generator to produce a negative charge at the 'bat' terminal, but that's just a guess on my part.

The issue may be polarity of the amp gauge. When changing the batery polarity, the amp gauge must be changed as well. if not, it will appear to discharge when it is actually charging well. just an idea to run through the situation. JimN

Nope, I had not switched the gauge from when it had originally been positive ground. I just knew enough that when I reversed the polarity of the charging system, the gauge read backwards. Also, a drain or charge of well over 30+ amps would still seem to indicate something is wrong. I can't run the tractor more than 10 seconds or I start seeing the poles of the generator getting hot. The little chrome nuts are already blistered.
