Have a 51 H leaking grease from the frt. of the transmission. I removed the lift pump, unhooked the drive shaft, coupler and retainer. That seal looks easy to replace. But, the seal around the lift all shaft is also leaking. I removed 3 screws but the retainer won't come off. I was hoping this could be done without going into the transmision. Does anyone know? I would post pic but don't know how to do it. Thanks for the help.

I mean the seal in the transmission around the shaft that drives the lift pump. The retainer is loose. I can spin it but it won't slide off. I like Bob M's idea. I'll try locking the brakes and putting it in 5th. Then unscrewing it. Sounds like it may work. I'll also try posting the pic. Thanks.

The belly pump drive dog must be removed from the lower transmission shaft extension in order to replace the seal. The dog is threaded onto the shaft extension with regular right hand threads.

To remove it, stick a suitable flat bar in the drive dog slot, or grip it with a large pipe wrench. Stick the transmission in 5th gear and the brakes locked, then give the bar/wrench a good lick with a large hammer to break it free.

Once the dog breaks free it will usually spin off easily by hand. And after the dog is removed the retainer and seal will slide off easily.

Nat2 is correct, you do not need to go into the transmission. Its been a while since I did my H but I had to put a pipe wrench on the collar of the drive shaft to turn it off to replace the seal.I don't recall if the pump shaft is the same but it definitely comes off from there for a seal change. Its all done from the belly pump area of the tractor.

I can help with the picture. Do you have it hosted on a website? If not, then got to www.imagevenue.com and upload it (them). It will give you three selections of text to copy and paste. Choose the last ones with the < > brackets. That is what this forum takes.

You should not have to "go into the transmission" to replace seals in the liftall. The liftall is out of the tractor, sitting on your workbench at this point.

Do you mean the transmission input shaft? Just give the retainer a bump with the butt end of a wooden hammer handle and it will fall off in your hands. It's stuck down from being there for 50-some years.
