Rebuilding IH C135. Kit sleeves has a groove and O-ring for top of sleeve none for bottom. Block has no grooves and old sleeves have no O rings or grooves. Engine is later serial number. Does this sound right ? Is the press fit on the bottom of the new sleeve good enough to keep water from the jacket out of the oil in the lower crank case ?

Have manual and it confirms what you are saying. Will recheck lower hole for groove in block. Still questioning why new sleeve has a groove just under the lip at the top of the sleeve ? Any ideas ?

The groove under the top lip of the sleeve is a radius cut which serves two purposes.

The groove insures that any imperfections on the top of the sleeve bore do not interfere with the fit of the sleeve.

More importantly the radius cut spreads any stress under the lip across a wider area. A square cut under the lip would concentrate any forces at that point and could cause the sleeve to crack.

This is the same reason that crankshaft journals must keep the radius when being reground. If a sharp step is allowed to remain the shaft will crack or break much easier.

If this engine has wet sleeves you need to clean the block area where the seals are installed. This includes any rust, scale or dirt. This is so you don't have any water leakage into the crankcase from the new seals. Hal

George is right, the o-rings go at the bottom and there are supposed to be grooves that the o-rings go in and the sleeves are a stiff push fit. If your block doesn't have any grooves then the real question is "why not". Was it bored out for some reason? Check again and measure the block bore. Hope you have the manuals.

You need to buy a good repair manual. Were there
any seals at the bottom of the old sleeves? If there wasn't, your new sleeves are probably pressed into the block. Hal

Hal, these are wet sleeve engines and the only sealing rings are at bottom of sleeve. Maybe he has wrong sleeve kit. You are right on about the book.

I wasn't 100% sure they were wet sleeves, but remember this engine being recommended as a replacement for the Super C's C-123 engine. Hal

That O ring you have should be for bottom of sleeve. There are none at the top. Without the seal in the bottom it will leak water into crank case. The head gasket seals the top.

Call the company that made the kit, they should know (maybe). If all is normal with this engine then there will be a groove at the bottom of the bore. Use a wire brush on a dremmel or similar and clean the inside of the bore and the groove. Make sure there are no burrs etc. Use a liquid soap on outside of sleeve and inside of bore. When you slide the sleeve in look from below to make sure the o-ring stays in groove when sleeve goes past it. Most, but not all, sleeves have a bevel or taper at bottom outside to help this. Others may have more help on the best way, I just know this method works for me.
