I have a 1066 that when at idle makes a "puffing" or "pop, pop, pop" sound. Muffler is intact so it's not coming from that. IS this a "normal" sound?

you have a bad injector, find it if not fixed it will burn a hole in the piston. happened on neighbors 1466,local dealer couldtn find a problem, talked to a buddy of mine at another dealership, and he gauranteed a bad injector,i told the neighbors, but they didnt do anything about it, until it went. and sure enough thats what the problem was.
just my 2 cents

Listen at the front of the tractor near radiator to see if noise is louder there. If so, pull valve cover & check valve lash on all rockers.

Nope, no new turbo. I will take all of yall's suggestions and see if it is the valves or the injectors. I don't seem to have any power loss, but haven't really put her to hard work yet, just some bucket work. I'll be dragging the disc around soon so I'll see.

Use a soap solution around the injector seals to check for bubbles while the engine is running. A bad leak leak may not make any bubbles but will blow the soap solution from around the injector seal.

Valve problems are not that rare on these turbo charged engines, especially exhaust valves. Once the guide gets too much wear, the oil film on the valve stem and guide can no longer seal the exhaust gasses from leaking up the valve stem. Once this happens the guide quickly wears and the valve will no longer seat properly. I have taken engines apart that still ran pretty well but had one or more valve springs that were completely filled with carbon.

If you remove the valve cover you can do a quick check by just trying to move the top of the valve stem. The wear will be side to side on the engine, not front to back. If you have any noticeable play in the stem the guide is worn out. Any carbon deposits inside the valve spring area is a sure indicator of too much wear.

Sometimes the injector pumps on those tractors will make a ticking noise at idle, one of our's does it sometimes and I've been told it's normal.

TSH, does it sound like air blowing? If so it could be a injector that is not sealed good. If so take it out and blow hole out good clean the shoulder of injector and reinsall. My 666 done this a couple years ago and that was all it took to fix it.

Yeah, it does sound a little like air. I'll check out the injectors and see if that is it. Though, the sound is pretty loud regardless of where you stand around the tractor.

If it is an injector, a word of advice, find it soon. We waited a year or two to fix it and partly burned diesel fuel began leaking out of the head. I had to use 2 coats of engine cleaner/ degreaser and a chisel, toothbrush, electric wire brush, and wooden dowels to clean the goo off of the head to just GET to the injector to take it out. It took 20 minutes to drain the coolant and change the injector. It took like 3 or 4 HOURS to clean the black goo to get to the injector.

TSH, I will almost bet that is your problem. Of course I am wrong about 40 times a day. When mine was leaking it got pretty loud as well. It took me a couple weeks to figure out what was making that weird racket. I drove 60 miles to a dealor give 17 cents for a brass washer to fix it, and then put the old one back in after a good cleaning. It hasn't made a peep since. Every time that cylinder fires it will loose compression out the hole and make noise.

Doesn't seem to smoke in any way, black or otherwise. It is almost like a "puff, puff, puff" sound. Don't have anything to compare it too other than a JD 4230 and I don't hear it on the JD.

I don't know about a popping noise, maybe a bent or sticking valve? If it is louder on the side of the tractor with the injectors, you probably have a leaking injector. They can make quite a bit of noise and kind of sound like a puffing noise.

I dunno,

When I bought this last 1066, I thought I could hear that "thump" sound coming from the straight pipe. Was worried sick that it might be the famous and fabled camshaft troubles of these engines.

I yanked that straight pipe and put on a muffler; haven't heard it since.

Perhaps it was just me, dunno.

Allan
