In IT manual when checking governor ,it tells what idle and wide open RPM's should be. Is this measured at the PTO shaft with a hand held tach. or somewhere else on the motor? Thanks in advance. By the way this is on a 48 M. Just wanted to see if the settings were close. Tractor is running fine.

yes a hand held tach would work good on the pto. hi idle on the pto is 606 for an m.

I use a Tach made by Stihl (the saw company). all you have to do is put it up to a plug wire and it tells you the RPMs. very easy and works great.

Where did you find the Stihl Tester?

They are great. Make sure that it is set for a four stroke or it will read rpmX2 JimN

Yup. they will read 2 stroke and 4 and 1, 2, and 4 clylinder engines you can use them for 6 and 8 but have to devide the number up.

One of those handheld tachs on the PTO shaft will give a pretty good indication. You want the tach to read a minimum of 540 rpms. When I first got my 1940 M, it ran good, but I though it seemed rather slow. A tach on the pto shaft confirmed my suspicions, not even close to 540. A little tweaking in the governor got me to where I wanted to be. If I remeber right, it now reads about 560 rpms.

four ways
Use a simple (some what old fashoned) Tach Dwell meter on the distributor primary wire (goes to the points)and ground. Reads rpm directly, cost about 20-30$.

Use a strobe shaft tach (probably rentable, or more expensive), but very useful for "no connection necessary" speed monitoring. They work on any moving mechanism or shaft.

Use a shaft tach on the belt pulley or PTO and do the math to determine engine speed. Still some fair cost, or rent.

If the manual shows from around 1200 to 1800 RPM, as it probably does, then it is the engine.
