I also have a 424 like Bob's but mine doesn't have a precleaner and it has factory power steering so there isn't a steering shaft on the left side like Bob's. The muffler is underslung since its a utility. A little under 40 hp and a great little tractor. Rus rings around the 8N I replaced with it.

Gary, as you may recall I have a 424 diesel, power steering, like yours. Mine does not have a air pre-cleaner. Were they factory or add on?

I have no idea, I would guess that they were available for a dealer to add. I know very little about what is stock, other than the owners manual, as I bought 2 parts tractors, one with a spun bearing and one that had a bad head. I rebuilt the bottom end of the one with the bad head and used the head off the one with a spun bearing. One had 28 inch tires and one had 24 inch rims on it. Mine has a set of double remove valves on the left side of the seat but the hardware for the levers, under the seat is missing. I never have found a parts tractor or any place that has those levers. I also need a grill but have never found one. I made a nose cap by cutting a 460 cap and removing a portion from the center. I will probably make a grill out of expanded metal and sheet steel, unless I find one. whatever the case, its a great little tractor.

third party image

Model/serial # tag is on the side of the tractor; ahead of your right foot.

Here's my 424; a 1965 diesel.

By looking at the serial number list. Look to left of page and click on serial numbers. It is under Research & Info.

The plate SHOULD have both the model # AND the serial #.
