I plan on removing the diesel injection pump on my MDTA for overhaul within the next week or so. I have an IT manual that I can follow, but does anyone have any experience doing this that I may avoid some serious pitfalls during removal and re-installation?

I am by no means an expert mechanic, but I removed mine on my own. I didn't think it was difficult at all. I also followed the IT manual and had no problems. The only thing I would do is make sure the timing mark is clean and visable at TDC on the crank pulley before starting ANY removal. I did not do this and when I went to put it back together I had to drop the oil pan and remove the spark plug from #1 cylinder to find TDC on that cylinder because I couldn't see the mark. Park the tractor somewhere where it won't be moved and unhook battery so the starter won't get bumped. Let the pump's gear meshed with the timing gear, don't remove it. That will make things easier on you at re-assembly. Take it apart with #1 at TDC, put it back together with #1 at TDC and she should fire right up! Oh yeah, and get ready, I had the exact same thing done to mine, just seals 700 bucks! Is what it is, though, can't have diesel fuel ruining a quality paint job

Thanks Bob. I'll be sure to follow your advice. I know it will cost some big bucks to overhaul the pump. Actually it seems to be a bad o-ring, but I also noticed that quite a bit a dirty diesel fuel came out of the drain the last time I checked it. I understand this should be filled within 30 weight oil, instead of diesel indicating some internal seals are leaking. I believe I'll just have to grit my teeth and pay to have her done right before putting a nice paint job on her.

As I recall. there are either one or two bolts in the timing cover that have to come off too. Read the manual very carefully. I think the bolts are nearly hidden in there.

Thanks for the info Bill. I have the IT manual and plan on following it very close, but I want to make sure I am not opening a can of worms by removing the pump. It seems like if you follow the directions it should be a "no-brainer".
The tractor runs perfect now, but has a leak around where the throttle shaft enters the pump. I am pretty close to having her completed for my restoration, and want this pump repaired prior to having her painted.

I know exactly what you are talking about. My 450D is doing the same thing.
But, before you work on the injector punp, try the small pump bolted to the injector pump.
There is a thread here somewhere where a man told me he fixed his with a kit for the small pump.
As I recall, it was not cheap...but the problem is not the injector pump but the small gear pump.
I just haven't got to mine yet. A seal is allowing fuel to run from it to the the inside of the injector pump.
Don't go in the injector pump if its running good and the fuel pressure is good. Try the little pump first.
Good luck.

If i was you i would just let the person who is overhauling it for mess with it. I dont think it is something that you want to screw up on accendent.

Thanks. The way I understand it is the pump has to be removed and marked with the the number one cylinder top dead center to maintain correct timing for proper re-installation.
As far as the overhaul is concerned, the injector pump will be shipped to the pro's in Iowa for rebuild. I was just checking to see if anyone out there has done this before I start turning wrenches.
