For the life of me, I can't get any of the 6 rear wheel bolts to loosen up! Even with an impact gun and a 6-point socket. Anyone have a good suggestion to try???

I stopped by the local Walmart today and got a spray can of that rustbuster that I put on a little while ago. Never have tried that brand before. Usually got Liquid Wrench or WD40.

I would use a cutting torch to heat the nuts since you can concentrate the heat to the nut.
Don't press the trigger that's used for burning.

After you get it oiled up, a few solid raps directly on the head of the bolt with a ball peen hammer can be effective.

Okay, first I will try getting a fresh can of rustbuster today and try soaking both sides of each bolt after work each day this week, then try the impact gun alternating between loosen and tighten over the weekend. If after a week of that I may have to drag out the torch. Really scarred of taking the temper out of the metal though.

If you heat those bolts to red hot, then quench them with cold water, you have really hardened them. I wouldn't ever reuse those bolts. Every letter series I have done gets all new bolts, nuts. washers wherever possible. Never ever reuse a lock washer, and best to replace it with raised point washer.

Spray some GIBBS on them and let it sit(or SP3 as it's called now).

try tightening then loosening back and forth
with whatever penetrating oil you use. once
you break the bond of the rust continue with this back and forth action works for me many-many times. as strange as it sounds
sometimes tightening first seems to break the"bond"quicker.lots of luck Bob God Bless

John I am assuming that its the thick heavy wheel youre talking about. Stick with the impact three quarter drive if you can get one and heat. The bolts are rusted in the cast wheel.Without the heat if you use a big bar you'll most likesy juust break the heads off and still wontbe able to get the wheel off.Dont put water on the wheel

It is the pressed steel wheel disk on the left side.

Is it really a good idea to heat up the axle flange with a torch to get the 6 bolts out?

I brought an H home and was going to put new seals in the axles. I broke a Johnston bar clean off at the end trying to get the nuts off of the wheel. I heated them red hot, doused them with cold water and they came off easily with just the socket wrench. I put anti-sieze on them for future removal. I have never seen a nut not come off once it has been heated red hot and doused with cold water. The sudden contraction of the expanded metal breaks all rust and bound metal surfaces. In the auto shop I worked in there was rarely a day went by that we didn't have to heat something cherry hot and douse it to get it off..nuts, wheel cylinder bolts, bleeder screws, hangers just about any component you could think of that would rust on and need to be removed

When the impact won't work, we use the breaker bar and a cheater pipe. Heat will help, or patience with the PB Blaster or WD40 or whatever your favorite miracle spray is.

Couple years ago tried everything (even hot wrench)to remove one off buddies SA, even broke a 3/4 drive socket with long cheater bar, good thing it was one that was guaranteed. We ended up using Kroil. Now I am sold on it. I bought couple gallons of it..

I'm like Allan in Neb. don't like using the hot wrench, only last resort!!!

John: I think Hal is right, probably heat is the answer. However, I've never seen a 1/2" or 3/4" impact that I couldn't out power with my bare hands on a 3' handle, and I can still do that at 65 years of age.

Hugh, nothing like a little cheating. I sometimes bounce on the cheater a little and gives it a little impact. Sometimes a dead pull will ring the bolts off. You are right about the impact wrenches, but they are a lot faster.

George: I know the impact is faster providing to breaks loose. However I quite often find myself breaking it loose for the impact.

If you are using 1/2 inch drive impact they are not that strong. I have used flex handle and cheater pipe on lug nuts for 50 years and do not remember breaking one.

You need a good acetylene/oxygen torch that's been suggested. It may require several heatings
and if you have a 3/4 air impact I would use it
and the 6 point socket. Don't use an extension if you don't need it. Hal

If you can get the use of a torch, heat em up, then try the impact. Short of that, keep pouring the penatrating oil to them.
