I have a 660 that has a major leak in the power steering cylinder. It has a large puddle of oil under the cylinder everytime I park it. The steering is a constant problem when I'm driving it. It is hard to keep it in a straight line going down the road. My question is how hard is it to rebuild the power steering on a 660? Would it be work that needed to be done in a professional shop? Do I need to rebuild the whole steering sector or just the cylinder? Could I take off the [power steering and replace with a manual one? Thanks for your help!!!

I rebuilt mine (W560) with parts from the local IH dealer, but many of the seals were obsolete. Hardly leaking now, but had to use some of the old stuff. If there is a kit available, I would sure like to have one. Please let me know- Thanks

The IH 660 and 560 only have one gearbox for both the manual and power steering. All you have to do is remove the hydraulic drag link and maybe change the flow control valve under the dash. I probably have a few of those.

That is not how I would solve your problem. I like the PS on my 660 and would get the seal kit listed in the parts manual.

I just noticed that there are two hydraulic drag links. It seems like they were used concurently as the book doesn't identify each unit with a tractor serial number range.

I can email you three pages of cylinder data if you want them or you can go to www.caseih.com. Somebody please correct me if that is the wrong address.

You could go the manual route, but I wouldn't recommend it. A W6, which weighs probably half of your tractor, is hard to steer at low speed and in tight proximity. I can't imagine a 660 with manual steering. I would think it would be possible to fix yourself, as it may just be a seal.

Yes you can go the manual route. Don't know about rebuilding the cylinder. If you decide to change to manual steering I would be interested in the power system.
