Hi guys, I just bought a 51 H at an auction and boy are there problems. First off some one put a 12v batt in it, and it was not charging. Also the kids from the FFA had been zipping around on it the night before and got the gears stuck in 4th, so at least everyone thought the trans was screwed also it wouldn't stay running without the choke on(it was out of gas!)and so I at least got the "restored" tractor cheap. After I got it home the trans was quickly dealt with and after jump starting it I noticed it wouldn't charge. I had put a 6 volt battery in it since the genny was stamped6v and the coil was still 6v. The FFa kids had hooked up the 12v battery neg ground style at one point. would that cook the VR? The tractor had been restored and some wires were hooked up wrong like the field and arm wires were backwards. also some wires were connected wrong in the switch case. I think I have everything hooked up right now, BUT it still won't charge and when I unhooked the gen to try a motor test nothing happened. so I took off the dust band and saw 3 brushes! this tractor has a regulator on the steering post and not the cut out type that uses a 3 brush genny. could this be the problem or should I just bite the bullet and get a new 2 brush gen and try that. A manual is next on the list, but I am hoping someone can help until then.

Hi Pat, I hand copied thato go out tomorrow and page last night since I am out of printer ink. I just went back to double check myself. At least I copied it right, I will have to go out tomorrow and double check everything. Good to hear yours is working!

Hey Bob, Alot of IH tractors in the 50's used 6 volt pos ground 3 brush generators with a 2 unit, 4 terminal voltage regulator. Works good in stock condition.
Leonard.

I do not know squat about charging systems but have seen several new voltage regulators fried by just one touch with reverse polarity.

You probably need BOB M's generator/regulator
troubleshooting flow chart. Hal

Oh, yeah. Most definitely.

Here's a distilled version of a common voltage regulator test (hope you don't mind, John T):

Ground the field to the case. If the system charges, then the VR may be bad.

Then, try shorting the regulator's BAT terminal to the GEN terminal. If the system charges NOW, replace the VR. If not, have the generator tested.

I'm worried about that wiring, though, and highly recommend checking it against a wiring diagram, if you have one handy. If you've already done so, then try running the tests as per John T above.

Keep us posted! Sounds like the local FFA chapter needs to put in some post holes with manual diggers to dispel some of that excess energy.

I had a buzy afternoon taking wires loose and checking them with an ohm meter that is how I found some of the VR wires were wrong and used one of the diagrams online to check stuff. I did put a new regulator on today. Also before I did anything I had the battery gen and starter tested at the Parts store and the gen put out 12+ volts on their tester but doesn't put out squat on the tractor. All in all the tractor looks to be used lightly and is not cobbled up at all, it appears to even have the original tires on it all matched goodyears. someone must have put some good money into it and even looks to have a new wiring harness. The regulator that was on it did have 2 coils inside and 4 terminals, Is that the kind of regulator that works with the 3 brush genny?

Yup - that regulator is right for the 3 brush generator!

I did need to add the FFA kids were a pretty good bunch and helped people load up but when they helped me load is when they told me about the night before, yep they acted like kids when nobody was looking! Can't blame them though, I had my moments when I was a kid!( while doing"burouts" with a riding mower in the garage we knocked my dads 1921 chevy 490 touring car off the jackstands...ooooopppsss! just chipped a bit of wood off the runningboard but still got blisterd)
