Hi Guys, I went out this morning and went back at figuring the H charging problem. Last week I had the starter, genny, and battery tested at a local auto parts store. Well it seems the guy who tested them was in a hurry and didn't hook it up right. he slapped the genny on the machine like he did those things all day everyday, but I took him at his word it was good. I had it retested today and it showed bad and only was putting out 2 volts. Instead of sending it off to a rebuilder, I managed to find a real live STARTER/Alternator shop that has been in business since Moses played in the dirt!!! took it to them they said it was bad also and should have it back tomorrow or monday. I will keep my fingers crossed and let you all know what happens.

Might check the timing once to reduce the weather cap popping. Otherwise probably valve lash.

verry simple test on your generator just ground the field and if that makes it charge the reg is bad. If grounding the field doesent make it charge the gen is bad. You dont even have to remove the gen to do the test.

I had a girl blow up an alternator on the stand one time. Cute chick, too!

After that, I don't take my vintage generators to the auto parts store to have them tested, although I still let them do the modern alternators.

Yep. Know how that works, but this time it was a genny! ( that is another stohis oneanother fourum ...70 olds 442 first year for one wire alts....car has sat now for 4 years but no time to work on it). This last guy who tested it at least has the smarts to look up the procedure to test it on the machine they have, I wish he was working when I took it in the first time.... I talked o the genny shop today and they are going to wait for "the Master"to come in on monday.I am glad I am not the only one who is a nut case on this one!! Give me a carb problem anyday of the week, carbs are my thing!!!! (this H also has a carb problem...leaky neeldle vavle, but I will fi that after it charges right. I suspect it may have the valves adjusted to thight also. the rain cap does a dance at almost every speed and it sounds way too quiet lifter wise. Oh well all in a days work!
