I have a 56 corn planter that I was given.I am in the process of fixing it up so it will work. The corn hoppers and fertilizer hoppers are chain driven. The drive comes off of the wheel. I could not figure out what engages and disengages to turn the drive on and off to the hoppers.I know you do not want to drive the hoppers all of the time-but I could not figure it out.thanks

Hartparr
there is a rod that activates a geared clutch on that shaft that the chains drive.I think one end of the ten inch long rod is attached to the clutch in the middle of that shaft the other end is on the round axle

To add to Mark , When traveling faster than field speeds or any distance pull the drive chains off . Just pull the idler back and slip it off and let it hang there .

When you lower the planter it automatically engages and when you raise it it will disengauge. I don't remember the mechanics of it but thats the way it works.
