I am not sure what has happened, but I need help! I have an excellent 400 that has been running fine. While I was mowing with a brush hog, the tractor just seemed to lock up. I had stopped and was taking off when it happened. The motor (gas) will turn over only a click at a time. The PTO will not turn in either the engaged or disengaged position. I tired to remove the PTO housing, but it will not slide out from the back of the rear end. Dropped the oil pan to see if a connecting rod had broke, but all were OK. Any help will be much appreciated. Phone is 281-615-2545.

see if you have a seasonal disconnect on the trans plate. It will be a 3" lever with a 9/16" bolt head with another hole to the side of it. If you do, take the bolt out and move the lever to the other hole and bolt it. This will take the PTO out and then see if the tractor will start. Then you will know if it in the back or the front of the drive...

If it is the PTO he may not be able to move the seasonal disconnect due to it being in a bind.

Place the PTO lever inbetween OFF and ON in that position, the brake is off, and the drive clutch is off. If it will not rotate in that location, go to the adjuster cover on the PTO and loosen the adjuster screws. (little metal cover on top held with a screw) If that still does not allow rotation, the Tractor Vet analysis is the answer. I would use the book to assure correct disassembly, and if it will not come out, I might try using more evenly distributed force. (of course not breaking the housing, or Dif) Good luck. JimN

You could have had a bearing seeze up on the pto drive and this will and can cause this if the engine is free but hard to tell since it is live PTO .This can be a tough one to find. And will require lot of wrench work. By the time you find it you may have that tractor striped down to the running gears of a kattydid.
