Ran out to the country with my camera to take pictures of this 310 pump on my 686.

The way it works right now, the throttle controls shutoff just like any other IH diesel tractor. It is easier starting at 1/3 throttle.

That lever on the bottom seemingly does nothing all the way thru the throttle travel. It is just there, but doesn't move; obviously, it should have a purpose?

Have no idea on the little plunger. Only time it is activated is during shutoff, but the darned thing isn't hooked to anything. No electric, no mechanical, no nothin'. :>(

I gotta go diggin' in my IT manuals. Somewhere, I got the notion that they quit using the cables with the updated 310s. About the time they changed the thermostat housings, etc.? Dunno.

Allan, There were two different Robert Bosch rotary pumps used on the 310/358. The early ones were the "BR" model, they've got a two-piece housing, the injection line fittings come out of the pump at an angle, and they were used on 706, 756, and 826. Those pump have an excess fuel position for starting. Your pump is the "CR" model, used on the 686, 786, 886, 3088, and 3288. Those do not have excess fuel. The plunger you mention is nothing more than a stop. On a late pump like yours, when the top lever just touches the plunger, the engine should be at low idle. The lower arm on the late pump can also be used as a shut-off, by pulling it fully rearward. I'm guessing it was used for that in a different application, thus the hole for attaching a linkage. The screw at the front of the lower arm is your fuel delivery adjustment, further forward you move the arm, the more fuel you get. Now, back to the early pumps. They had another plunger to the rear of that lower arm. When the arm was pulled back far enough by the cable to just touch that plunger, it was in the excess fuel position. The engine was shut down by pulling the cable the rest of the way back, compressing the plunger into its barrel.

Allen, picture number 3 is the cold start position. Acts like a choke on a gas engine.
The bottom lever on older models was connected to the Stop/Run control cable. As the Vet said the adjustment screw at the bottom controls the HP. Now if you are just idling around you can stop some of the smoking and slobbering by wedging a piece of metal about the thickness of a dime between the lever and the HP adjustment screw. This cuts down on the amount of fuel delivered to each cylinder. Then when you need the HP just remove the metal.

Allan, It sounds like 1/3 throttle on your tractor is equal to what I am used to as the primer position on the cable style. I think Tractor Vet explained the difference. It still bothers me that you need starting fluid at 50 degrees. Maybe something needs adjusting such as valves? Wayne

I dunno.

The way they explained it to me was that at 15:1 compression, the 310/358 just barely qualify as a diesel fired engine anyway.

That's why when they put in the replacement 17:l pistons, the difference is like night and day as far as starting.

IH had a program to replace the standard pistons with the higher compression pistons for owners who complained of hard starting or excessive smoke while idling. It was not advertised, the owner had to initiate the procedure with a complaint, and it was only available in certain Northern states. Of the twelve 686,s sold at the dealership I worked at then, only three had the pistons replaced.

Allan, After all the information that appeared today, my thoughts are that your 310 is different (newer) than the ones I have been around. Also, your tractor should not need starting fluid at 50 degrees. An engine of proven design that has been used for several years in different models of tractors should have cool weather starting perfected. If your motor is 15 to 1, that sure explains hard starting. Along that same line of thinking, the design for starting a 15 to 1 motor shouldn't require starting fluid. Based on years of design, technology, competition, etc, something should be functioning better than it is for it to start so hard. Hope my comments don't cause any lost sleep. but you take too good care of your equipment to have unnecessary problems. Wayne

No loss of sleep here and no problems starting. She pops on the first revolution.

That's what the either assist is for. :>)

It just runs too darned good to justify tearing it down and putting in the new style pistons.

Allen you may be on to something there. I found my book and it says the 310 should show 315-340 lbs compression on it, and 385-415 on th 312. That seems like a big difference.

On the 686 they did not use the shut down cable and incorpatated the full fuel into the throttel . on the 666 they had the cable for shut down and cold start that i have seen and on the 706 and 756 they also had the shutdown cable with the two place . Now i should not tell ya this but that bottom lever also controls fuel SOooooo o if ya want to sorta tweek it just abit then back it out about a half to one turn . Did i say that. NAHHHHH .

All 666's had the 312 in them. The 310 german was installed in late mid production 686's and hydro 86's. Early 686's had the 312.

I just noticed that the little arm that you mentioned isn't attached to anything looks like it should be attached to a cable. I'll do some investigating quick on the IH parts site. . .
