While mowing recently the cub quit,flat out quit,acted like the switch was accidently shut off. Checked the wire and the switch its good,juice is going to the coil but appears no spark at the plugs. It turns over fine and the rotor is truning as it should-is getting fuel,Ideas?

If it is the points is might be worth your time to convert to electronic ignition. I've got a SM and it will srart in -20 and run find. I hate points and would highly recomend converting. -David Goode Coggon, IA

I recently had an "H" do this.....just stop instantly.(Had to haul it home). It turned out to be the points. I didn't realize they could just suddenly burn out.

Here is a quick check of the system. Put it in neutral. Have a screwdriver in hand. Turn on the Ignition. Stand next to the tractor (Dist side). Pull the big spark carrying wire from the center of the distributor, and position it so that it is 1/4 inch away from the block. Use tape to do this so you don't get shocked. place the screw driver on the nut with the wire attached on the side of the distributor (goes to the coil). Touch the tip to the side of the distributor (shorting the wire and terminal to ground. Then pull it off the nut. A fat spark should jump from the coil wire to the block. A small spark will happen at the screwdriver. If this happens, the points need to be looked at (under the black cover under the rotor). If no spark, then the points may be closed, and need cleaning adjustment.
Point gap is .020" with the four lobe cam turned so that it is pushing them open (high point)
If this fails to make a spark, the coil may be bad. good luck, JimN

The tractor has been starting and runnig great for the last 2 years o so and it just quit.....I have another cond and a new coil that I planned for the H farmall, I will try that first because its an easy swap. I cant imagine ths points need attention,its been runnig and starting great !

Back not too many years ago, when everything had points and condensors, cars and trucks included, it was common practice to do a complete tune-up once per year, or every 10,000 miles, whichever came first. A lot of tractors recieved a tune up in the spring, to get ready for planting, and then again in the fall, to prepare for harvest. A tune-up included points, condensor, and spark plugs, and sometimes included a new rotor and distributor cap.

The points are the only real wear spot in the system. They are mechanical and wear at the contacts, and the rubbing block. They are the most often serviced component, and need to be very good to make all other parts work correctly. Most condensers that are replaced are replaced for no reason. (mechanic for 45 years) many do go bad, but check those points first. jimN
