Hello all. I just purchased a new to me '68 424 with a bush hog and loader that I get to install and bring home this weekend. I have to replace the hoses on the loader, first.

What all do I need to know about this tractor? I have a '48 8N back at my parent's place, and my day job is a mechanic, so I'm not totally lost when it comes to tractors or repairs.

The PTO stage of what the gentleman called a two stage clutch is out. Is there a relatively simple adjustment for this, or does the tractor have to be split and the clutch replaced? If that's the case, I may just deal with it for a while.

Are there any key things that I really need to know about this tractor? What size plow or bushhog could it handle in Tennessee clay?

Thanks!

I appreciate the comments, guys. I really dont have the time to be splitting the tractor in half right now, but maybe this winter I'll get around to it. Right now, I need the tractor to maintain 48 acres of property. I'm really glad to hear it's twice the tractor the old N was, because that little thing was a hoss. I wanted to get another N for this property, but I couldnt pass up the deal on the IH. I've always been a red fan for some reason.

The tractor has a 5' King Kutter bushhog that's almost brand new, but I have a slightly used 6' Bushhog brand mower sitting down at the barn. For what I need to do, it sound like the 424 will be able to handle the 6' just fine, unless I get into some really thick stuff.

The tractor does have power steering, which I figured was basically a necessity with the loader on the front. The left tie rod is a bit loose, but it really isnt that bad. The valve cover leaks and it black smokes a bit when it's cold and you really load it, but I'm not terribly worried. With the amount I plan on using it, it should run quite a while.

I'm really excited about it. I stopped by and took the bad hoses off of the loader tonight, and will have replacements made tommorrow, then install them and drive it home. I really want to see how it handles in high range. I'll try to get pictures up this weekend.

First off, you now have twice the tractor that 8N ever was, even though its the same size. I pray it has power steering, they were a bear without it. I agree with George and JJ I have used ours with a 7 ft brush hog but it is really working. It purrs along with a 5 ft. You will probably have to split the trator and replace the clutch to fix it, but its not as bad as it seems if you have a chain fall and a floor jack. Get at least an IT manual for it. Send us some pictures

That size of mower should be no challenge for a 424. I drove one at the county fairgrounds with mower on it that was either 90" or 96" that we used to cut the back 15 and front 5 acres of weeds about once every other month.

The PTO clutch is likely out. I split mine to fix it. It will handle 2x14 plow with ease, or even 2x16. And should be OK with 6 or 7 foot bushhog.
