I am learning about Farmall M's. I have purchased two and have found that the shifters are different. One is a 1947 model and the oter is unknon since the serial plate is damaged. The 47 mode has the shifter cast in the cover plate on the left side of the centerline. The other has the shifter boltd to the cover plate on the right of the centerline. What is the difference andis one transmission better than the other?

When you crank up rhw M with the shifter bolted on the right side, you will find that the tractor will run backwards. That tractor has a reversable top as used on low drum cotton pickers and it is set up for reverse operation. To make it run forward, it will be necessary to remove the top and flip the differential and install the regular shift rails on the left side. The reversable tops are getting somewhat hard to find so you might want to put on a conventional top when you flip the differential and sell the reversable top and reversed shift rails if you have no need or want to reverse the tractor again.

Harold:
Thanks for the info. I bought it as a basket case. Did onclude the single wheel front also. I am intending to build a "Classic" ITPA rules puller. Are the gear ratios the same as a regular M?
