Can You repalce the seals on the shifter rails of a 656 gear drive without pulling the top cover off the transmission? thanks dtk

If they are the same as on a 686, yes you can. I replaced mine a year ago. I removed the battery and the lower steering coluom. You have to support the upper coloum with a hoist. I then drilled a hole in the seal and installed a self tapping screw. I pryed out the seal with a bar under the head on the screw. Clean every thing up and carefully tap the new seals in place. Was an fairly easy job, just took same time. Much easier than pulling the whole cover.
