We are starting work on an H that frequently wants to pop out of road gear once you get up to full speed. Any ideas on cause and how to fix the problem.. Thanks in advance. Gareth

I didn't have that problem with my H but I am in the prosses of replacing all the bearings in my trans. I was able to locate all of the bearings with no problem except for the front input shaft pilot bearing. It is a hard to find one but I did find a source! Coldwell Inc. in Terre Haute IN can get them. Phone # 812-232-0276 That will help keep the shaft from flopping.

Worked on the neighbors H and found the detent spring was rusted and broke causing it to fall out of fifth gear. Does it feel like the detent is there once in gear? If it does then look at the 4/5 gears, either way you're pulling the top cover off. chris

I had the same problem with my H. It turned out to be the poppet springs on the shift rail not holding the balls into the rail properly. The whole top has to come off the transmission. I replaced 4 and 5th gear springs as these are most commonly used gears. My 5th gear spring was in two pieces. These are still avaible thru case/
IH and the cover gasket.

In addition to Owens comment, I will add that the teeth on the shifting splines on the input shaft and on fourth fifth sliding gear get worn back from smashing it into high gear. Replacing the input shaft, and the intermediate bearing, and the 4-5 slider is the real answer. If getting used, make sure they have good leading edges on the splines. This can be done through the top without a tractor split. JimN

The transmission main shaft front bearing is worn out.

Remove the input shaft from the front of the transmission to get access to the bearing.

Unfortunately the H does not use an outer race on the bearing but rather runs directly inside the input shaft. Once this shaft gets rough it can greatly reduce the bearing life.
