went to dealer today to buy o rings for the lever style couplers on our 656...they couldn't find the right ones...somehow they got me sold on the iso/pioneer retrofit kit to make it function like the couplers on a 5088...96$ is a lot of money for a part time workin kid, but i'm sick of dealing with the adaptors and all the nuisances they cause (where are they?). i recommend the kit to anyone with a ~72+ ih and its lever couplers. installation is EASY. i did it in about an hour, and you don't have to remove the housing from the tractor. if you price out the cost of parts for removing the entire assembly and replacing with pioneer components, the IH part comes out slightly higher, but not by much. the one i got still has IH stampings on it and not CIH.
the kit i got mentions an available/recommended drain kit. anyone have any idea what parts and procedures are involved in the drain kit? frankly the small amount of leakage isn't much worse than usual with the original parts.
hope others will find out that this kit exists!
also hope the original core parts will go up in historical value ;)

Your're right, I sure do like it that IH went back to the ISO-Pioneer style on the 88 series, but I didn't know that they were recomending retrofitting them to the 656, 66-86 series. Those darn adapaters on 66-86 series are never anywhere to be found when you need them! Thanks for the tip!

heck it's a 20year old IH developed kit! mine still was stamped/molded with the IH logo on it. the instructions included were dated 6-83! wish we knew about this years ago!
PN for the kit:1 272 964 c94.
"one kit is used per coupler assembly 544 786 r95"
"it is recommended that hydraulic coupler retrofit finishing kit 1 282 269 c91 be utilized with [this retrofit kit] to provide a drain system and reduce dirt build up on the coupler assemblies and rear of tractor... [the finishing kit] provides sufficient drain hardware and identification decals to finish one tractor."
i did not purchase the finishing kit, didn't know about that until i got the thing home and was installing it. but 96 dollars was already too much for me to handle...frankly without the drain kit, it's basically no more messy than before, only with some slick coupling pioneer fittings and no levers that never open the adaptors/couplers properly. i hooked up the pressurized one way line of our discbine (someone forgot to put the safety stops on!) and it didn't gripe about it at all..smooth as butter, even the levers put up a fuss over that type of situation (with adaptors anyway...we only ever had one cylinder with the ih fittings anyhow!).

this is definitely a must have modification. it's been out for 20 years surprised no one ever mentions it. now if you have all 66 and 86 series tractors, this mod wouldn't be a must have, but for the typical farmer it certainly is!

my dad was grumbling something about how good the originals were and now how do we use the ih fitted cylinder...i think he's remembering the tractor as it was 31 years ago! something about no one liking pioneer fittings either...probably the original non-pressure coupling versions, since they are standard issue these days. things have certainly changed even in my lifetime..
wonder what the ih style cores will be worth now ;) -karl
