What make & model tractor do you have? Many IH's came with Delco-Remy generators, but as with anything old, somebody could have changed it over the years.

I tried to put pictures on but it didnt work. It looks like the motor part with hood and grill of a tractor its mounted on a steel cart with steel wheels and the generator box fits were you would hook up the rest of the tractor,we have it down at a place that rebuilts alernators and things and the guy said it would help greatly if we new what it was. I will give you my email adderss if you like to see pictures hard for you guys to help with out them. The guy said he thought it was about 30,000 watts. We bought it for a generator for the cabin and would like to get it working because we are farmers this thing is the coolest thing.Email me and i,ll send you pictures. sue@ticon.net Hope you guys can help.

That's a diferent kind of generator than I was thinking of. 30KW is a sizable generator.
You probably have an IH Power Unit. These are basically tractor engines that are configured to power things like pumps, balers, generators, etc. There are differences from their corresponding tractors engines though. They came in several sizes from cub engines on up. 30 KW would take an engine as big as a W9 or maybe even bigger.
How many cylinders does it have?
Gas or diesel?
Can you see any serial numbers stamped on the block? If you can make out the serial number, with the prefix letters, maybe somebody can cross reference it.
A picture would be best. If you can post one or supply a link to one, it would help a lot.

being it's a continental motor w/ ih sheetmetal, it's probably a motor off a combine from the 40s coupled to a generator.
hope this helps

Sue, Just about any engine of that era could have a magneto. Since you also said that it is a flathead, it probably is a Continental like the plate indicates, since all the larger IH engines are overhead valve type.
Sorry, but I know almost nothing about Continental engines, so there's not much use in e-mailing pics to me.
