Have a farmall 400 that is really stuck in gear and will not move. Have taken the shifting tower off and attempted to move the slides, they will not budge. Took off the cover that allows me access to the trans gears and attempted to move the slides that way and they will not budge. Even used a really BIG pry bar(I break concret with this one) and the sides will not move. Gears inside look ok.
What, if anything, can I do next to get this tractor out of the field.

Thanks for you help.

Scott: Did you hold the clutch down while doing all of this? If there is enough presure on gears that will create a problem. What gear is the tractor stuck in? Is there a possibility it is in two gears at once? Are clutch and TA properly adjusted? Is your transmission usually hard to get out of gear? Answer these questions and I'm sure someone can help. With more info for the guys, you will get a better answer.

Mr. MacKay,
I sure did hold down the clutch while doing this. The tractor did not appear to shift hard but it has always been a little tough to come out of reverse or 1st gear. However I was shifting just fine between reverse, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, not 5 minutes before. Not sure what gear it is stuck in, was in second--shifting to third and when I let out the clutch, the engine started to stall. When into the archives and did a search. The major suggestion was to remove the shifting tower and move the slides with a screw driver. Well I removed the shifting tower and the slides will not move.

Looking into the shifting tower hole at the slides from behind the tractor left side of the operators station:
left most slide and middle slide are lined up. Right most slide is forward the other two. Seems to be a sort of bracket that surrounds the middle slides and is notched(like the slides). This bracket does not appear designed to move. None of the slides are aligned with this bracket(and the the all are ahead of the notch)-the left and middle slides are about 1/2 way aligned with the notch on the bracket, right slide is well forward the bracket.

Once again--any help is apprecited as I really do not want to call IH dealer to come and get this to fix. Would really be a chore getting a rollback into the field to pull this 400 out. Not to mention cost prohibative.

Thanks!

Scott: You have told me a lot this time by saying what you were doing when this happened. The fact the tractor started to stall indicates you have two gears engaged. Of the three slides which one would you estimate is in neutral? This usually doesn't happen when shifting from 2nd to 3rd. Those three rails that your shift lever operates in are as follows; left is 4th and 5th, center is 2nd and 3rd and right is 1st and reverse. The transmission cant get in two gears that are on same rail. This usually happens when shifting from 1st to 2nd or vice versa and shifting from 3rd to 4th or vice versa. What usually happens is end of shift lever is worn and slips out of notch in rail without removing from a gear then you put it in a gear on next rail. If you study your shift lever movments below deck, you can fathom which gears you have tractor in. The next thing I would try is another vehicle that will move tractor enough to take presure off gears. The ideal item would be a set of come alongs as you have to remove presure off gears. The reason the clutch didn't help is the two gears at once. You may have to try pulling both foreward and reverse and hold. One way will release that presure. This should work, and after you get it freed up the end of shift lever should be built up with weld and ground off so it nicely fits the notch in one of the rails. One other item I notice your clutch and TA need adjusting. This should be by the book exactly. Close doesn't count. I do hope this helps, if not come back.

Scott: When you get to building up end of gear shift lever, it should be rectangle shape close to 1/4 x 1/2 and slighly rounded on corners. I find it is best to have it built a bit oversize a grind until you get it shifting smooth.

Another possibility on the gear item and the fact you were shifting from 2nd to 3rd. This indicates one of the other rails had to move. When you get it freed up just move each rail separately to see if detent balls are holding them. This can compound the problem as if tractor is on a grade a rail with detent ball faulty can move. In fact you may find that is the problem, and not the shift lever at all. It's not rocket science, the first time it happened to me, 30 years ago, I didn't have a computer to turn to. That is why old farmers have no hair, scratching head trying to make it work better.

You may want to try jacking up one side until the rear tire is off of the ground. This should also relieve the gear train pressure. If you are on a slope either headed up hill or down, be sure to block the remaining tires to prevent rolling off of the jack. If you are on a slope, this would also explain the gear train pressure.
