F-12 Starting problems

I wonder if anyone can help me with my F-12 problem. It has always been difficult to start. Usually this difficulty is accompanied before long with raw gas being dumped down the 3 and 4 cylinders. The obvious answer would seem to be flooding. But WHY is is flooding? The float seems set correctly. As are the valves. Is it a spark plug problem? (I use Champion W20s) Is my magneto too weak? Is it time for a carbeurator rebuild? Is there something basic I've missed? I am at my wits end and it is essentially ruining any enjoyment I get out of the old girl. For whatever it's worth it also becomes even harder to start once it has sat for about half and hour or so after running it. I would be very much appreciative of any any help.

Make sure you have a good seal on the manifold on the block and to the carb. This causes your problem a lot. Get rid of those champions, they just cause trouble. get some autolite plugs. Double check the points in the mag, and make sure one side is rounded and in line with each other. One of my F-20's did the same thing a few months ago. I had to pull the point, file, clean, and made sure the gap was perfect. If your carb is flooding, then the problem in in the electrical (plugs, mag.) If there is no gas leaking (not flooding) then the problem is the seals on the carb, or manifold. That F-12 should always crank by the 2nd pull on the crank, at least all mine and others I have seen. Good Luck!

I have a problem with mine like that also. I haven't pulled the carb apart yet, but I highly suspect it is a leaky needle valve. If I have the tank full and the gas valve turned on, it floods like Johnstown PA running or not. It starts fine if the gas level in the tank is below half.

I have/had the same exact problem with mine.I went in and adjust he float so that the level in the carb would be just a little lower, that help for a little bit,but it did it again,so upon advice I got on this board,I put a second gasket on the seat and set the float back to where it was. That helped a whole lot,but I am still having problems.if I turn on the gas and use no choke and set the advance about half way, itll start by the second or third pull, most of the time. Also I thought the magnet maybe getting weak so ihad it recharged and puit in a new coil, points, and condensor. That really helped too.
