I have a rough running F-20 that I can't solve. Engine starts fine and runs smoothly at full retard on the mag. As I start to advance the spark, it starts to miss and continues to miss at full advance. Timing is fine. There is no back firing. Have tried: New points & condenser, cleaning out the mag, new plugs & wires. Have removed all the wires and watched them spark while in full advance at a low speed. All are sparking regularly. Engine has good compression. Engine speed doesn't appear to change the issue. Engine was recently torn down to rebuild the head and put in new rings. Rough running engine due to the mag setting was the same before and after the rebuild. Your thoughts on this guys ?

AT full retard, shouldnt it cut off?At least on my 14 thats the way it is.Sounds like you have the mag timed wrong.I dont know about on the E4A mag,but on the other one,I cant recall the number of it off my head, when the little "lever" on the mag is all the way up,it grounds out the mag,and all the way down in full advance.

The magnet could be weak causing that too.My Grandpappys old 30 has a weak magnet on it and thats almost exactly what it does, but it will cut off at about half advance.Runs great otherwise otherwise, just have to leave the advane alone.I dont run it much.

I set both my F20 and 30 at .018 cold. You can hear them tap, but not excessively. Never had a problem at this setting.

You might go back and double check the valve settings. Check them when the engine is thoroghly warmed up. Sounds like a valve (or valves)are not closing all the way. I like to set them a little to the wide side on the settings but I still run mine hard. The rockers should tap a little bit none the less. I don't have the specs for an F-20 so maybe some one will post them.
