I have a late model Super H - battery under the seat. I had the generator rebuilt and now the output is between 9 to 9.5 volts when running. My thinking this that this is too much juice for a 6-volt pos ground original setup. I'm concerned the voltage regulator will short out because of the 9 / 9.5 volt output from the generator. I take generator back to the shop and the shop man says generator cannot be adjusted to lower output (he riveted the generator brushes in place). He also says "Don't worry about 9 volt output, the regulator can handle it and will not be damaged." Is the true?

Lou - You're right - 9+ volts is too high for a 6 volt system. Problem is most likely your regulator - though it could also be a ground in the wiring between the regulator and generator "F" terminals. Try pulling the wire off the F terminal at the regulator with the motor running at governed RPM. If the voltage drops off the problem's gotta be the regulator.

You can continue to run it like it is - it won't hurt the regulator. However the higher voltage will overcharge and shorten the life of the battery if you run it very long. Also you have the risk of overheating and ruining the generator.

Note - If the regulator is doing it's job it will automatically the generator output 7.0 - 7.5 volts.

Bob, thanks for the reply. I did not even think about the battery being cooked.
