The neighbor has a super h farmall that we were thinking of taking to the local antique tractor pull. We took it up to the local dealer and ran it on their dyno, engine rpms ok. His chart said that the tractor should have 33hp and we had trouble making 20. We checked the points, new plugs. Is there any way of checking the timing with a light, my tech manual makes no mention of it. Could there be something wrong with the carburetor and if so what do we look for. Thanks for the help.

I have the same thing w/ my M. Took it to the dealer and it came out at 40. New manifold, elec. ignition, dry air cleaner. Runs fantastic no smoke, you hit the throttle and it just rev's up really fast. I don't get it either. 75psi in each cylinder. I adj it any different I lose top end and just doesn't work good. But fuel economy is fantastic. I had it stock last year and did field work with it used a full tank. Did same thing this year and used half tank plus it didn't work as hard. Do you think with all of the upgrades that the carb is to small and that's why I don't get higher hp.?

In my previous post I was just headed in the direction of 'quick and dirty'. There are other things that you might have to look at such as air flow (as Rich Griffin) mentioned, carburetor float level, plugged screens (sediment bowl or carb), setting the valves, plugs, plug wires, points, and/or loss of compression due to worn/broken rings. Just a couple of things to check out.

The timing marks on these old tractors are a bear to find. Most old mechanics will time it by ear. You do about the same thing with the idle mixture screw. Turn it in until it starts to run rough then back it out about 1/2 turn. It may take several attempts to do this since you are adjusting two things at once. The timing should be a "one adjustment" but wouldn't hurt to check it again after adjusting the carburetor. Check to make sure that it runs good a full throttle. You can get a feel for how it is running by riding the brakes a little while starting out in 5th gear. Not scientific but will give you an indication as to what kind of an 'attitude' it has.

I did not know this until I stumbled across it in my operator's manual, but the main adjusting screw on the Super H carb is supposed to be FIVE turns off the seat for max power. Thus it is really a fixed jet that can be restricted by the adjusting needle when max power is not needed and better fuel economy is desired. That won't pick up 10 hp though.

Check your air cleaner, could be plugged. Had the same thing happen on a super M.
