I have come to the conclusion that I have a 300U. I had some great help from Jim and Hugh. Now, Hugh said the P in the serial # stands for independant PTO for the tractor without TA. Mine doesn't have a PTO, so what does that mean? How hard would it be to put in a PTO, and to install power steering.

For power steering you can use the power steering gearbox/valve body from a 300U or 350U, which are identical, or a 460U which is a little different but a bolt-in replacement. In addition to that, you'll need the regulator/safety/flow control valve from a P/S equipped 300U or 350U, as it has a priority valve in it that the non-P/S units don't have. You could also cobble up some other means of adding p/s, I'm sure, but I don't know any particulars. In general, you'll find the P/S units in high demand and difficult to find, it might be cheaper just buying a P/S equipped tractor.

Darrel: You are getting us mixed up as Jim told you what P was for, whereas I on the letter J. Not important but Jim deserves credit on that one. Probably what that means is your tractor has shafting and gears internally for mounting IPTO. Your tractor could have had pto once and someone removed it. I think you would be safe in assuming you can buy the IPTO unit and install. There is a short shaft and two couplers that can't be left in tractor without the pto unit to hold them in place, so you will need those also.

I can't help you on the power steering matter.

Could be some one removed the PTO before you got it so putting one back in would not be hard to do If it never had a PTO new you way have to split the tractor and put in PTO drive gear and maybe back plate of the main clutch to drive it.

You have to understand, I've got green blood in me, so this is some unchartered territory for me.
