OT hauling question

Well I have a 2000 Ford F350 with V10 and four speed automatic, 3.73 rear end. I will be using it to haul my WD9. But my question is what if I am pulling an EMPTY six by sixteen foot, tandem axle, bumper hitch stock trailer (sorry, don't know trailer weight) across Wisconsin and Minnesota, should I still turn Overdrive off?
Thanks much.

Thanks for all the help. Especially thanks to Red Raider and CNKS for your links to the right boards. Makes me realize there must be a board for everything on this Internet.

No, that it won't. But I am picking up the plow that goes with the tractor. A gift from my wife's family.

Check the archives in the site below. I know it's for diesels, but it's tow related specific to your question.

Ford recommends to keep the truck in OD as long as possible, except when the load causes excessive shift hunting. The truck won't even know you have an empty trailer.

GO to www.woodalls.com/forums, and look at the towing forum. I would agree with that size truck, you probably won't have a problem -- but, what causes the transmission to overheat, in addition to the load, is a lot of shifting, either in and out of OD, or in and out of lockup, while in OD. Get a transmission temp gauge, then you can select the gear that keeps the trans below 200 degrees, at least most of the time. It is the oil temperature that ruins transmissions. I assume your truck has an external transmission oil cooler, the one in the radiator is not good enough, regardless of what your dealer tells you.

Excellent point secondary cooler will be needed. Dealer shops around here keep telling everyone they don't need one but the old timers will tell you the factory twerps are full of it and unless you want to burn up your tranny-add secondary cooler.

Your tranny will not even notice the load of an empty trailer. A 6 x 16 tandem wheel trailer has little initial weight or drag to overcome and your 2000 Ford F350 with V10 and four speed automatic, 3.73 rear end will do nicely. In fact if you are pulling it on the open road with the tractor loaded it should still do fine. I tow all the time and never take it out of OD unless I'm in mountains or going downhill and need braking power from the engine.

Unless you are carrying a full load in the truck I would say no. The weight of the empty trailer is probably less than the what the truck would have to pull if you had a full load of dirt in the back and passengers in the front and no trailer, you would use OD then without thinking about it. I always use OD hauling empty trailers in both of my trucks and have never had a transmission failure in 20 years of towing.
