Other than the obvious cleaners on the market and of course oven cleaner, does any one have a home made degreaser recipe that works? It seems to me I once ran across a recipe that used some lye, detergent and distillate but my memory of it is not clear. I am interested in your concoctions for degreasing. Mike in Exeter Ontario

one trick i use is to mix a can of lye in several gallons of water in a large plastic tub or garbage can to soak parts in for several days. But be careful with lye! Also be careful mixing stuff unless you know what you are doing. You can create nasty fumes, fumes that can kill.

Hey Bill, in a previous career that mixture was called napalm! It'll clean things up for sure, but if happens to catch fire you're in DEEP kimchi!

Mike: You were just in Halifax. Black rum mixed with the brine from salt herring make a good degreaser.

Did you notice as most Ontarians in Nova Scotia do that the spirits section of the liquor stores are 75% rum. Rum is truly the drink of choise of Nova Scotians. Send me an e mail and give me a report from home. Did you get to an OX pull.

Sorry Mike I confused that one the salt herring and rum will cleanse your own system, but then it will probably do both.

all of the above sound pretty good, except for the lye. just dont get it on aluminum. or you might not have any aluminum left.

New Holland machine manufacturing plant uses a lye solution to pre treat metal for painting according to a newspaper report about a workers death when he fell into the vat! How's that for a run on sentence! Dick Davis
